Update From The Farm

Hi! From Hide Away Lane!

It’s time to update what’s happening on the farm. As I write this the dogs “Lady Jane and Little-un” are snoozing on the couch. Are they spoiled? Maybe a little ya think! The house is quiet, cat’s “Cash, Izzabell and Mikey” are chilling out somewhere. “Stormy” stays outside all the time, and “Iszzie” I fear fell prey to the coyotes. I have not seen him in weeks. Sure miss the big guy. I get so attached to my little and big critters.

The second heifer (pictured) I obtained this spring and I named “Wendy.” My good neighbor brought over his bull, so by this time next year, should have a couple of calves running around here on the farm.

The hens “Queenie, Bubbles, Star, Goldie, Buffy and Red” are giving me eggs daily. Supplying me, my kids and families and even selling some. Can’t beat farm fresh eggs. Let me know if you want some. You get reach me under the contact us page. The pen hen “Grace” is sitting on eight eggs. Hope for a good hatching. “Prince Charming” the male keeps guard on her and her nest.

As you can see all the animals at “Hideaway Lane” get named. Late mornings find me outside tending to my animals, garden and flowers before I have to leave for work. I am getting plenty of cukes and giving plenty away. I am enjoying garden fresh tomatoes, squash is going wild, cantaloupe and melons have set up and the green beans are finally producing. The pepper plants are blooming. My garden space is over full. It sure is nice to have fresh produce.

My flowers “Bouncing Betty” (pictured) are blooming as you can see and they really need to be cut back. I got them started a few years back with just a handful I pulled when I went by my grandparents homestead site. The house and out buildings have been gone for years. The only thing on the place is a pit where the owners now, had dug and pushed in to them junk. Here is where I found the “washing machine” my grandmother used which is now holding a pot of my Geraniums which are also pictured. I found the kerosene cook stove she cooked on. It’s in bad shape but I hope to be able to straighten it out enough to use as a plant stand. My kettle of moss has done well this year and I planted Salvias in a flower bed I put together this spring.

I only go shopping in town a couple times a month. That is where shopping at amazon.com come in very handy. It saves me time and money. I can shop online at amazon.com and find plenty of outdoor and household items at a ridiculously low price. Check out my site and see for yourself. Not to mention, I don’t have to stand in line like I would at the store. The time I save by shopping at amazon.com I can get started on other projects.

I have a hand crank cream separator I want to get some “Hen and Chicks” started in. It’s not the same one my folks used when I was growing up on the farm but one just like it and believe me, I got well acquainted with that one from the cranking to the cleaning of it on a daily basis along with all the other chores us kids did back in the good ol’ days.

My dad was always saying “a little hard work never hurt anyone.” My siblings and I turned out o.k. and I have raised four hard working children, so I can say Dad knew what he was talking about.

Well, I will sign off for now as things need to be done outdoors on “Hideaway Lane!”

I do have a tragic update for you. As I was writing this entry, Grace, my peacock had been scared off her nest by a skunk and her eggs were taken. This made me heartsick. I so love my peacocks. Needless to say though, the skunk didn’t get away with his devilish deed. You can come to your own conclusion on that one.

I am a rock lover!

You will see a couple of pictures of some rocks I have on my property. The rock that sits in front of the tree reminds me of a rabbit sitting on his hind legs. Very unique I must say. The one that is out by the cow fence looks like a cow. How appropriate that I put it there. I am always looking for rocks of unique stature so if you find any, contact me.
